Em-phasis not em-pha-sis

It was freaking cold this morning!

The apparent temperature around 7.30 pagi tadi was –0.7°C. I know it wasn’t as cold as Canberra or Tassie but for Perth, that was really cold ok, hehehe.

I like wearing fingerless gloves during Winter sebab I can still feel and use my phone without all the typos masa nak menaip sms. But pagi tadi I was wishing I had the full gloves on sebab my fingertips were freezing which made it so difficult nak ber sms, hahahaha. My nose was numb from the cold as well. Nasib baik pakai scarf so telinga I was so snuggly warm instead of frozen, hikhikhik…..

I nak type sms cuma 2 ayat aje pun ambik masa sikit nya lama Open-mouthed smile.

But I would rather have this cold than the hot 40+ Summer weather anytime.

(And I wouldn’t mind a little bit of snow as well while it’s still this cold….. please…pretty please…. hahahahahaha…. Winking smile).

Anyway….

Have you ever been in a situation where you do not know how to pronouce some English words? Well..it’s more of getting the right emphasis on the syllables instead of the pronunciation.

I selalu kena buat spelling homewwork dengan The Little Misses. Buat spelling dengan Miss 7 is easy sebab her words are everyday words like tomato, November, guard, hopping and so on. So no problemo there when it comes to pronunciation and the emphasis.

Spelling dengan Miss 12 pulak can sometimes make me tergagap sekejap and have to think of where the emphasis is on the syllable Smile. I know what all the words mean but if you get the emphasis wrong, she won’t be able to understand what word I’m trying to say kan and then she can’t spell it right, hehehe.

What kind of words you might ask?

They are not hard words but they are not words that you use in daily conversation so tu yang kadang2 boleh terlupa emphasis dia kat syllable yang mana. Like correspondence, apparatus, corroborate, isosceles, conscientious, mathematician, commemorate and so on…..

The Little Misses kalau balik M’sia kadang2 find it difficult to faham the way orang Msia cakap English sebab dah biasa dengar Aussie accent setiap hari, hehehe.

And some people when they speak English as a second language, they don’t care about the emphasis in the syllables, tu yang kadang2 bukan The Little Misses aje tak paham, I pun tak paham, hahahaha….

I ni yang kena cakap English hari2 pun kadang2 find it difficult to  put the emphasis correctly, lagi lah Nenek and Atuk kat kampung yang cakap English occasionally tu aje kan.

So, kalau you all jumpa The Little Misses kat Msia and they keep on saying, “pardon?”pardon? what did you say?”, it’s not because they are deaf, it’s because their brains can’t compute the Manglish accent and emphasis, hehehe….. Winking smile.

For dinner malam ni, I made stir-fried chicken with vegetables and cashew, nori omelet and tahu goreng.

My last dinner before I turn 41, hikhikhik….

Happy Birthday LG!

Your little Misses remind me of masa my spouse dekat Malaysia. Malaysian didn't understand his standard American accent, and he didn't really comprehend Malaysian slang. Once, we were at a shoe store, and after trying a few stuff the sales person said "Want? Don't Want?" and without a beat my spouse replied "English, please?" Being a good wife, I just had to'ter'ketawa out loud. But similar incidents happened all the time while we were there.

Dinas,
you sure slalu tersengih kan bila dengar your students pronounce some words. Kalau I jadi you, maulah hari2 tahan gelak, hehehe.

Amy,
thanks for the wish ye. Amin...
I bila balik Msia, either spend time kat Ijok or kat KL aje so occasionally dpt jugak lah jumpa kawan2 blog :-).

Your kids tu dah Aussie accent habis, hahaha.

Aidah,
41 oledi mah, so old lah! French, Italian, German and yang seangkatan dgn nya semua ada male and female which makes it a bit more complicated :-).

Pendragon,

KOG,
