Aussie fare

We used to live in Adelaide and Adelaide is quite famous for it’s late night takeaway snack called the pie floater.

It’s been there forever and ever I think. It has even made it into South Australia heritage icon Smile, hehehe.

And now, it is even becoming a ‘gourmet’ food served in cafes in Adelaide. Sebelum ni cuma dijual kat moving pie vans tu aje.

But sepanjang2 we all kat sana, tak pernah lah we all merasa benda alah ni sebab tau tau apa yang dia letak dalam meatpie tu kan.

Last night for dinner, I made meat pies.

And I asked The Other Half if he wanted me to make a pie floater for him jst to reminisce,

He said, “why? I just want my meat pie with tomato sauce. I dont want it soaked in green stuff!

Apalah Laki I tu, sikit pun tak adventurous, hahahaha.

Since he wasn’t that adventurous, I pun malas lah nak jadi adventurous jugak, heeeee….

Actually, we are not a soup family so I don’t think anyone will be interested to eat their meatpies in a bowl of green pea soup topped with tomato sauce.

So, we only had our meat pies with tomato sauce and potato nuggets aje lah.

(sangat lah tak mencabarnya kan, hahaha.)

But I made a slightly different filling than the usual meat pie, I followed this recipe loosely. I added diced capsicum, diced carrots and diced celery into the filling as well so I don’t have to make salad to go with the meal. And I used the cheesy vegemite instead of the original vegemite.

All of us loved the taste, no one had any idea that I added vegemite into the filling.

It is  a good way to use up the vegemite, that’s for sure!

I made them in muffin tins and patty pans so senang nak makan.

And ini pulak the cake I made to take to Sunday school pagi tadi.

I used this recipe called sultana cake. It is basically a butter cake filled with sultanas.

And I altered some of the ingredients.

I tak guna sultanas, I used currants instead which I think is much nicer than sultanas and I only used 1 1/2 cups of currants and there’e plenty!

And I used about 1 cup of milk instead of just 1/2cup, replaced the vanilla with orange concentrate/ essence and used 1 1/2 tsp of baking powder instead of 1. And I didn’t bake it that long (I guess sebab my oven ni tak betul sangat.)

It is very moist and just sweet enough for me to want to eat slice after slice after slice of it, hehehe. Sikit pun tak muak lah kiranya.

Pendragon,
lebih kurang lah but marmite UK mari and vegemite ni true blue Aussie. Both I tak boleh telan, cuma hubby and Miss 8 aje yg boleh telan vegemite ni.

Kak Kasih,
Kalau pergi Adelaide, singgah stop over kat Perth dulu :-).
Sultana cake ni memang sedap, lagi sedap klu guna currants sbb dia halus2 kan so budak2 pun suka :-).

Azra,
meat pies memang makanan ruji rakyat OZ ni, hehehe. I'm glad you tried making the meat pies. Lepas ni boleh lah you jual kat Msia, sure laku kan :-).

JieJ,
mesti buat comel2 so memang menyenangkan masuk mulut, heeee.

Norhidana,
I suka buat kek tp tak boleh buat slalu, takut gemuk, hahaha.

Tun_telani,
I pun sama lah mcm you, walaupun dah duduk OZ bertahun2, still cannot understand how people want to eat something that tastes like that, hehehe.
But I guess, the same can be said with belacan and budu, rebung and tempoyak kan :-).
It is definitely an acquired taste :-).

Mulan,
I tak boleh lah telan vegemite mcm tu aje, adalah yg akan gag masa nak makan tu, hehehe.
Tapi klau dah masuk dlm benda2 mcm ni and tak rasa sgt, I boleh telan :-).

Ummiaisyah,
I mula2 ingat nak tukar sultana ke choc chips tapi takut manis sgt pulak so tukar ke currants yg halus2 tu. Still nmpk mcm choc chips kan, hehehe.

Rozita,
sekali sekala buat and makan meatpies, memang marvellous :-)

Shiori,
try lah but I lagi suka currants dr sultanas sbb currants ni halus2 so budak2 yg tak suka sultanas, still boleh telan currants :-)

missNick,
I pun bila masuk blog orang tayang food, meati kecur air liur esp bila tgh lapar:-)
