A weekend of eating

Semalam we (the girls) got invited to our new next door neighbour’s house for a makan2. They had a prayer session sebelum majlis makan2 tu and I happened to terpergi masa diaorang tengah berzikir. I thought at first diaorang tengah baca yassin sebab semua tengah pegang buku but try as I might, I really couldn’t understand what they were saying. Dalam hati I berkata, kalau baca surah Yassin, sure I boleh faham sebab I dah selalu baca surah Yassin. But mungkin jugak sebab lagu bacaan diaorang lain sikit tu yang I tak dapat tangkap kot, hmmm. Tapi memang I tak dapat tangkap langsung zikir apa yang diaorang tengah baca until towards the end when I could hear them chanting Hassan and Hussin repeatedly.

Oh, before I forget, our new neighbours ni we think are Syiahs. Sebab kalau tak silap I, most of the Afghans kat OZ ni yang were granted refugee status are the Syiahs who are the minority group in Afghanistan. So, bila diaorang berzikir Hassan and Hussin banyak kali, I rasa betul kot our tekaan kan. And malam sebelum tu I pergi rumah diaorang and I saw the grandmother tengah sembahyang and she’s got this round stone on her sejadah which she kissed lepas habis sembahyang.

Anyway, so we girls got invited to the makan2 after the prayers. The girls makan with the kids and I dijemput makan with the adults :-). Now I sort of know how The Other Half feels like when he’s invited to a Malay gathering and he doesn’t know anyone there and everyone speaks Malay! Sebab I felt so leftout semalam sebab semua yang keliling2 I bercakap bahasa diaorang and I sorang2 makan terkulat2, hihihihihi….

I was watching everyone else makan dulu sebab tak nak lah buat faux pas kan. Ye lah, kang tersilap etiquette makan, sure kena gelak dengan diaorang ye tak, hehehe. Kot2 I termakan dessert bersama2 dgn nasi ;-). Diaorang hidang lebanese bread, nasi basmathi, salad with yoghurt dressing, this dish called ghorme sabzi and another eggplant dish. I was telling The Other Half after that yang I dah biasa sangat makan nasi with lauk pauk yang spicy and hot so bila makan lauk diaorang, it’s a totally different experience lah :-). I rasa kalau I bagi diaorang lauk pauk yang I masak, mau nya susah jugak diaorang nak telan kot sebab pedas sangat :-).

But it was good to get to know the neighbours and at least they are friendly!

Today pulak we went to send The Little Misses to Sunday school. They looked so cute in their tudung, hehehe.. Terus nampak naik muka jawa diaorang ;-). They told me they want to wear baju kurung pulak next weekend :-)

And The Other Half asked for nasi lemak for dinner malam ni. See, dia yang teringin nak makan nasi dulu, hehehe….

Nasi lemak with its accompaniments. Meriah kan pinggan I :-).

Love,
thanks :-). You nak skip rice sebab hubby dah terbang ke? :-). For me, I don't mind not eating rice for a week but I makan other carbs lah like bread, potatoes, noodles. What about just eating chapati, tosai, puri, naan for a week to replace the rice, boleh tak you think?

Kak Ain,
Zahra tu mcm minah arab and Alya mcm rupa orang Afghanistan pulak, hehehe..
I pun suka sotong!!! :-)

Pretty indeed the girls bertudung ;)

It's best to look & see first to avoid faux pas kan esp bab makan ngan lain nationality ni...as for the small talk tu...apa kata you bantai balik cakap Jawa ngan dia orang..pasti ternganga & terkebil2 sekejap..muah ha ha..tak pun just nod & smile..hentam jer la..ha ha

Lama I tak makan nasi lemak...menyelerakan sungguh yr plate of rice tu..

Hehehe, exactly kak! No way I can skip rice when Hubby is around, he won't allow me to do so! ;)

Boleh gak sub rice with ur suggestions but I might need to buy them coz I don't know how to prepare! hahahaha ;)

Tks alot for the tips! Will work it out...:)

Nadia,
Baru lah betul anak jawa kan bila comel, wakakaka..
Azli tu dah mengidam ye? ;-). Sambal totok/tutuk tu sambal jawa. You pergi blog Hana Jepun tu, dia ada resipi sambal totok tak silap I.

Yat,
that's right about the faux pas. I ni cukup seriau when it comes to eating etiquette of other nationalties sbb tak nak buat silap yg mencemarkan air muka jawa I, hehehe..
That's what I did yesterday, just senyum and senyum and senyum, hehehe...

schult,
hikhikhikhik....

I saw your girls semalam from far and when I asked my girls about budak baru, they said 'Alya n Zahra ke' and terus they all cerita how cute your gilrs were especially miss 6. And my eldest cerita dia dgr ustazah tanya miss 10 something in malay n miss 10 tak jawab then ustazah tanya if she can speak Malay, and she answered 'sikit sikit' with her org putih accent :)
Bila balik rumah my eldest girl terus visited your blog to have a better look at your girls' photos because she said they were so cute dkt masjid tadi.

LG, your kids are so cute wearing tudung! Dia org belajar apa kat Sunday School? Belajar mengaji & islamic studies ke?

Rajinnya lah you masak. I pulak tiap2 hari dok pening utk pikir, apa yg nak masak esp ada 1 jam jek nak prepare for dinner. Hari ni plan nak masak sotong goreng celup tepung with siakap masak sweet sour & tom yam.

About FB, I pun ada jugak tapi jarang mengupdate status. Masuk FB pun sebab nak menjejak kasih with my old friends. Alhamdulillah last week I dapat jejak kasih with my ex-schoolmate masa primary school. Terus terkenang zaman budak2 bila sebut pasal main galah panjang, rounders & macam2 lagi.

Psst..jadi buat nasi lemak tak?

Along,
Masa we all balik m'sia haritu, boleh katakan everyday makan nasi sampai tak larat dah perut we all ni. And then bila balik sini, we all saje je buat bet sape yg akan mintak nasi dulu and we lasted for 4 weeks tak makan nasi, until my Hubby mintak nasi, hahaha..
I dr kecik mmng tak suka nasi sgt, I lagi suka makan mee mcm my Mak :-), tu yang boleh bertahan tak makan hari2, hehehe

Syuhada,

Shaz,
Really? Where were you masa tu? Kat dlm masjid ke? I tunggu diaorang kat luar masjid aje dlm the car, hehehe.
Zahra & Alya told me yg the 'nenek' asked her stuff in Malay and they said diaorang tak paham langsung, hehehe.
They said they called the Ustazah 'Nenek', I tak tau lah betul ke tak tu :-).
Nampak sgt kan yg my kids aje yg budak baru semalam :-D.

Kak Azie,

An,
dulu diaorang pergi sekolah agama so I tak hantar ke Sunday School lah but now dah masuk public school, kena lah hantar belajar islamic studies and quran reading kat Sunday school :-).
I pun slalu nya on weekdays ada 1 hour aje to cook from 5-6, tu yg my meals slalunya simple gilers, hehehe..

Hm...memang lauk-pauk dorang tak pedas kan?I pun kalau masak campak gak cili padi dlm tu,tapi takleh la banyak2 kang nanti berasap pulak telinga...i think their eggplant dish lebih kurang sama ngan Iraqi eggplant dish called 'tepsi bathinjan'Its basically casserol dish with lamb chunks+tomatoes+eggplants with some spices but thats Iraqi style.Iraian punya not so sure..

lemongrass said...

Kak Acik,
wakakakakaka... dah siap panggil mak ye :-P

Mira,
How are you? How's your son?
Middle eastern people memang tak makan pedas sangat ye? Pepper lada hitam diaorang makan tak? I pun semlm rasa nak potong cili aje letak dlm pinggan I, hehehe.
The eggplant dish semlm takde meat dlm nya but ada tomato n yoghurt.

Yang jadi lauk je! Nasi lemak tak jadi - lupa tak ada daun pandan - sabar je la... weekend ni Insya Allah :-D

Macam mana pun, Little Misses tetap pan-Asian :-D

Alhamdulillah my son is doing fine...juz recovered from his fever due to his 5th month vaccination..

Yeah, Iranian are Syiahs..tu la pasal masa kak Min dengar dorang berdoa atau in their prayers they dont say selawat Nabi Muhammad..sembahyang pun 3x je unlike us Sunnis.Kalau kak Min tengok bila dorang sembahyang dorang tak qiam tangan, juz letak kat sisi...according to my husband they said is haram to qiam tangan during the prayers...well tu kepercayaan doranglah kan..kita ahli sunnah wal jamaah mmg takleh ikut..coz they're Majusi's

lemongrass said...

Ayu,
agaknya kalau dia duduk sebelah Zahra, mau dia lagi putih dr Zahra ye :-).

Mia's Mom,
hehehe.. takpe lah, jadi jugak kan lauk nya :-). Next time make sure kena sentiasa ada supply daun pandan dlm freezer tau ;-)

Mira,
diaorang sembahyang 3X aje ye, tak tau pulak I tang tu. But selawat tu memang cuma dengar Hassan n hussin yg banyak. Memmang lain betul kan dgn ahli Sunnah
