Another garden update

When we first moved into this house, the back garden had 3 fruit trees.

I guess the previous owners loved fruit trees.

Then we moved in and the fruit trees started ‘disappearing’ one by one….

First to go was the nectarine tree…

Then the plum tree…

Then today, the last of the lot, the apple tree, was cut down by The Other Half.

Why did we cut them down?

Because we really do not know how to look after them which resulted in them producing not nice fruits with not much flavour at all.

And the insects love them so much so they were full of caterpillars and what nots.

And we’d rather plant veges, citrus trees and berries than look after those 3 trees.

So, The Other Half said that all of them had to go sebab dia kata, “buat menyemak aje!

hikhikhikhik…

So tadi when I went to take the girls to their Sunday school, he made the final cut to the apple tree and bila we all balik, the apple tree was no more….

What apple tree? We’ve never had one!” he said….. Open-mouthed smile.

It’s one of those things, we think that it is cheaper to buy the fruits when we want to eat them than keeping the trees alive and healthy and producing loads of fruits each season.

I guess our next project will be to transform the area where the fruit trees used to be into another garden bed.

And we can start planting what we want in that area.

I wish I could plant a nice mango tree, maybe the kensington pride or the calypso variety in the back garden.

But….definitely tak boleh lah sebab if I were to plant a mango tree, maknanya we have to get rid of the big vege patch and set aside that area just for 1 mango tree and nak kena jaga from all pests lagi.

Dah gerenti lah The Other Half tak nak kan, hehehe….

That’s why, balik2 tanam…

Sunflowers (which is the only flower yang the Other Half sangat berminat nak tanam!)

And the usual tomatoes, eggplants, watermelons and all the herbs.

But nasib baik lah tahun ni The Other half relented when bini dia beria2 nak tanam pokok bunga in the garden.

I planted some colourful Cockscombs and colourful snapdragons in the front garden.

And the snapdragons which will look much prettier when they grow some more and produce more flowers on the stalk later on.

There’s pink, white, red and yellow snapdragons in the garden so far. I’ll take some more photos esok2 eh.

Assalamualaikum LG,
Berbudi kepada tanah memang tak rugi.
Dulu masa duk kampung ada jugak Sham tanam "kacang botol". Cukup masa petik kat tepi pagar terus buat ulam untuk lunch. Pergh.. sikit punya nyaman.

Salam Kak LG,

Masa summer sayur2 yang kakak tanam boleh hidup juga ? I've been thinking to plant some veges (like tomatoes, cucumber) in kl so wondering how's you maintain your garden during hot and humid weather.

Cockscombs tu yang merah & oren tu ya..? It looks like 'bunga balung ayam' that I used to include in fresh flower arrangements. Masa tu kebetulan auntie florist kat pasar ada bunga tu (which I've never seen before), so I beli & customers love it. After a while dah susah nak dapat. Sayang je. It's unique and pretty.

I am forever jealous of your vegetable garden. I belum cukup minat & kudrat nak buat my own :P

Kak Kasih,
memang that variety, cili dia gemuk2 :-).

Sham,
Waalaikumsalam. I pernah cuba tanam kacang botol tapi dia mati masa Winter, sedih sgt2 sbb I memang minat sgt2 kacang botol tu.

Cik Mat,
Salam. Kalau mcm muka Cik Mat lah rupa snapdragon tu, I takut dpt nightmares aje tiap2 malam, hikhikhik ;-)

Yana,
sejuk untuk certain pokok aje, pokok2 yg lain bnyk gak yg mati, hehehe

Ummu Madihah,
Salam. memang tgh subur segala sayur2 skrg sbb cuaca dah panas sikit. Pokok balung ayam yg ni jenis dwarf so kecik2 aje semua.

Pendragon,
give me your address, nanti I pos dr sini. Tapi boleh pos seeds masuk Qatar tak? My email is lemongrass@y7mail.com.

Nurul Huda,
Salam. Masa Spring, I akan tanam sayur2 yg memang perlukan musim panas untuk hidup so during Summer, dia akan terus membesar lah. But, bila takde hujan, we have to water them everyday so tak layu. Cucumbers and tomaotes love the sun and they love water as well :-).

Babylola,
hahaha...as logn as you are happy dpt tengok kebun orang lain, ok lah tu kan :-)

SOHO Mama,
you are right, they are called balung ayam in Malay. They are very pretty once they grow big. I pernah nampak kat blog someone dia tanam pokok bunga balung ayam ni kat depan rumah dia so I guees you can definitely get the plants in Msia lah. You might have to start growing them yourself utk letak in the flower arrangement, hehehe

Nani,
Memang I rasa pokok ni pokok 'zaman dulu kala' but skrg dah bnyk hybrids so tu yg kaler mcm2 ada ;-)

che_puang hafiza,
memang kalau nak buat solok lada, kena cari cili yg gomok2 mcm ni kan :-)

Dana,
asparagus takes a few years baru boleh tuai hasil pastu the plants hidup berpuluh tahun, tu yg malas nak tanam, hehehe. Artichokes pulak I pun tak tau rasa dia mcm mana :-D

Kniedaz,
masa kat rumah sewa dulu, tanah we all pun sekangkang kera aje so we all tanam segala dlm pots, hehehe

Anash,
email me your address because they sell the seeds here. My email is lemongrass@y7mail.com

Chekgu Azrine,
kalau kat msia tanam pokok apple depan rumah, belum sempat kita makan, dah kena curi dgn orang sbb unique :-)
